Literal or Parable?

  • Posted on April 18, 2007 at 4:29 pm

Dear Andrea,Please tell me your interpretation of this dream. I have dreamed that a man is having a heart attack and he clinches his heart he goes down and passes out. No one comes to aid him. Could this possibly be a dream that is showing me what may happen to this person because I do know him.

Please advise

Angela

Dear Angela,

First, as the bible says of dream interpretation, “it is not in me” (Gen 41:16) but rather, “interpretations belong to God.” (Gen 40:8) What I know in general, I share, and interpret only when He gives one, and even then I am cautious, in awareness of my own fallen human condition. Anything I tell you, He must confirm to you in prayer.

Most dreams are not literal, but parabolic, and are usually about yourself. What characteristic, personality trait, strength, or weakness stands out to you about him? It’s possible he represents the same trait in yourself.

It’s also possible, if you’ve had concerns about his health, that the dream only reflects your own human fears. Strongly felt emotions, especially ones we won’t deal with while awake, often get expressed in our dreams.

The heart attack, whether you sense it’s about you or him, could be literal, but as dreams speak symbolically most of the time, it’s probably symbolic of emotional trauma rather than physical. Whether it’s your own, or you sensing this happening to him, the thrust of the dream’s concern seems to be no one helping, doing anything about it.

If this friend isn’t a Christian, if he’s dying, the death of an unbeliever sometimes is symbolic of their coming to Christ. But if that doesn’t strike a bell (you will usually “know it when you hear it” with a right interpretation), I sense more the cry of your own heart, whether on your behalf or his, than a message from God, which is perfectly fine. When our dreams reveal something weighing on our hearts, the best response is to take the concern to God in prayer. And the sad thing is . . . there are a lot of people out there, suffering from spiritual and emotional attacks, with no one coming to their aid.

If your primary emotion in the dream is compassion (with possibly anger that no one is helping him) rather than fear, it is also possibly a call to intercessory prayer on the behalf of hurting hearts. Sometimes, our heart’s cry is also God’s.

In Christ’s Grace,
Andrea Graham

Strife, Dogs, and Child-like Faith

  • Posted on April 10, 2007 at 10:54 am

Katherine writes:

I am worried, my two-year-old daughter woke up inconsolable and screaming in terror. She had a nightmare that a vicious white dog was after her. Can you help with what this may mean?

Dear Katherine,

White can mean pure evil as well as the positive side of purity. Other negative associations can include leprosy (unclean), self-righteousness, and even death.

Dogs are unclean creatures in the scriptures, where they have a reputation for eating people, and can represent unclean spirits (demons,) worldly/sinful passions, or strife.

Unless she’s had a negative encounter with a real dog that could have spurred this, I’d thoroughly check her environment for strife, as there’s a very strong possibility she’s reacting to strife in her home or some other place she frequents. If this is determined to be the culprit, you’ll have to take measures to alleviate the hostilities for your daughter’s sake, or find ways to protect her from it, such as not allowing arguing to take place in front of her (though if it’s marital strife, a possible meaning for the white color, children too often still sense it even if Mom and Dad are all smiles around them.)

If the problem turns up at daycare or an alternative to it, consider changing caregivers.

If everything does check out on Strife Avenue, and she hasn’t ever had a scary encounter with a real dog, it’s probably a demonic attack. She may be too young to stand up to them, but you can stand against them on her behalf (which as her mother, you more than have the authority to do so if you know the Lord.) Pray the Lord’s protection over her (where she can hear what you’re doing) and also command the devil in the name of Jesus to leave your daughter alone (which if you’re concerned about her getting a bad impression about herself, I don’t believe you have to do this in her hearing.)

Once she’s calm, you can also try telling her to cry out “Jesus” when she has bad dreams, because Jesus is bigger than bad dreams and they are afraid of him and will go away. The faith of a child will probably put more force behind her feeble cry than most grown-ups’. Plus she’ll have you standing in the gap for her as well. If her father is around and knows the Lord, he should pray with you for her, too.

Now, a non-Christian in this situation could still pray for her, it just won’t be as effective without the authority Jesus gave to those who trust in Him. With someone who’s not in right relationship with Christ, the devil is highly likely to not listen, so appealing to God would be more effective than going up against the devil. They’ve been known to respond in this case with something along the lines of, “Jesus I know . . . but who are you?” But that’s not a concern for Christians. If they try that and you know Him, just remind them who you are in Christ.

In His Love,
Andrea Graham

Enemy Strongholds and Nightmares

Dear Andrea,I have reoccurring nightmares about evil bullying or attacking me. Enough to scare me. I wake up trembling and anxious. I say my prayers. I believe my actions are are not one with the Lord and I am attracting evil into my life.Could this be true?–Monique

Dear Monique,

Most nightmares come from us working out the bad stuff in life that we don’t want to deal with while awake, but not all. If a nightmare clearly doesn’t relate to anything you’ve gone or are going through, that leaves two possible sources: the devil, yes, and God. The latter kind of nightmare is comparatively rare and usually prophetic/intercessory in nature. A, ah, holy nightmare will sometimes warn of the future, reveal happenings in the spiritual realm, or even something happening to a perfect stranger, but regardless amounts to a prayer prompter.

Now, third, demons do attack in our sleep, and often in the form of a nightmare. This doesn’t necessarily mean we’ve done something wrong. The devil will usually attack us in the same areas where we’ve given in to him in the past, but he also tends to attack Christians strongest when we’re hurting him, and that means we’ve done something right. If you’re in right relationship with the Lord, stand firm, and rebuke the devil in the authority of the Lord, and he will flee, I promise (or more to the point, God does.)

If the devil has a stronghold in your life, however, that’s a different story, yes, and it’ll be much, much harder. In this case, it’s important to locate the breech in your armor, or the area in which you’ve compromised with the world and not been transformed by the renewing of your mind (or gone back to old habits). Overcoming the sin the demon behind the nightmares has dominion over will empower you to throw off the dominion he’s trying to stake over you. We cannot do this in our own strength–only the blood of the Lamb can cleanse us from sin. But we can do all things in Christ, He who strengthens us.

Now, normally, the blood of Christ protects his followers from demonic oppression or out right possession, (which are simply varying degrees of control they’ve gained over a person) but if we give the devil a foothold, it can come to that, and sometimes these will require assistance from the Body to be delivered from. Talk to your pastor or a trusted elder woman in the church (men should go to men for assistance and women to women where feasible.)

Where do they arise from? We can inherit them from our parents via what’s known as a generational curse. This is where we find ourselves caught in vicious intergenerational cycles (the most publicized being codependency, physical, sexual, and substance abuse) often don’t know how to break free. We also pick them up from poorly-chosen friends as easily as a bad habit. Our thought lives and the media we follow in all forms are also common, but sometimes overlooked, windows the devil can enter in through. As it is with a computer, so it is with our minds. Garbage in, Garbage out.

Pray, but don’t just say your prayers. Seek the Lord with all your heart and place your trust in Him. It’s not easy. Daily, we must make the decision to crucify the flesh and follow after Him. We all stumble sometimes. His grace does not ignore our condition and merely love us anyway just as we are–His grace is an outstretched hand waiting to give us the strength to stand.

In Christ’s Grace,
Andrea Graham

Odds and Ends

  • Posted on March 9, 2007 at 12:06 pm

  Gentle Readers,

BibleRhymes.com is offering a darling little children’s book. The cover price ($17.95) seems awful high for a hardback copy of such a short book (32 pages, but the e-book is free and well done. Granted, part of the proceeds are going to supply books to orphans and other needy children.

The rhymes are kinda cutesy, but it is a children’s book. Doctrinal purists will be upset (and I must admit I was rather annoyed.) On the sixth day, one could conclude on his planet, the woman was created first, at least going off the sentence structure, as he rearranged the order for a rhyme, and needlessly as woman and man rhyme.

Particular sticklers will note, contrary to what the book implies, before the fall, our first father and mother were vegetarians and did not eat meat, as death was unheard of then, so more accurate than “a buffet of fruit and good meat” would have been, “of fruit and delicious soy burgers.” It could equally be argued that point is a tad academic for a children’s book and for that matter accuracy on this point could be taken as promoting vegetarianism post-fall.

Regardless, doctrine-wise, the rest of the storybook is a playful, but fairly accurate depiction of the creation story as described in Genesis.

What impressed me most was the graphic full-color illustrations. A few panels, such as the planets on day one, fell flat for me, and I’m sure it won’t suit everyone’s tastes, but to me, the artistry seemed perfectly suited for a child’s book. Especially in this age group, the pictures will express the wonder of the creation story more than the actual words on the page.

Of course, the pictures also highlight the confusion many have over the order of creation, with light created on the first day, and the sun, stars, and the moon not until the forth. We’re so limited in our understanding of the world and how things operate, it boggles the mind to think God created light before he created the objects that give off light. But in thinking about it, that is another display of God’s power. The illustrations may give some children the impression God created the sun twice, but such questions are easily answered and encourage dialogue between parent and child about the creation, so the flaws are not necessarily lethal. I’ll leave it to the parents to decide.

But I suspect a glance at the beautiful artwork will probably make up most of their minds.

On an unrelated note, I’ve given quite a bit of space recently to the negative symbolic meanings of the color red. But symbols usually have a positive meaning as well as a negative, and red is no exception. It can speak of danger, but it’s also the color of love and life, via blood, and due to the effects of the blood of Christ, spiritual cleansing and forgiveness. The contextual clues around the color, such as the nature of the object it colors, will show whether it’s meant in a positive or negative light.

Getting back to a more literary note, I have a column featured on the Lost Genre Guild and over at Adam’s Blog that discusses Amillia Taylor, a preemie born at a mere 21 weeks, six days gestation, and relate her record-breaking fight for survival as well as some under-reported goings on in the abortion industry to the technological advances and society I predict will grow out of the current trends in “Frozen Generation,” a short story featured in the anthology Light at the Edge of Darkness

Nightmares and Warfare

  • Posted on March 5, 2007 at 7:51 am

I hope you can help me figure out my dreams, in general I often dream of homes, being disrobed and not remembering how I got this way, fighting with my parents, whom I am estranged from, having heart attacks and a spotlight showing this and feeling embarrassed. Always being chased, someone trying to capture me and hurt me…always running away from something evil…thank you for any help and God bless you.

–Tortured by Nightmares

Dear Tortured,

All quite common. Most of us have looked down in a dream and realized we were partially or completely naked in a dream at some point. It’s an expression of our fears of public exposure, of being seen for who we really are, of revealing parts of ourselves we wish to keep private, the heart attack dream seems to be along the same lines, only with pain/dying (nonphysically most likely) underscored. Houses represent ourselves (on all levels) and most dreams are about ourselves, so houses are likewise common. The various rooms, condition, and items all speak to various aspects of you and your life. Our day time struggles, especially the ones we don’t want to deal with, often carry into our night life, so most of us with estranged family have had mental arguments with them, both awake and asleep. Ever rehearsed what you’d like to say to your parents? That’s exactly what you’re doing in your dream, only more honest than we usually are awake.

If you’re running from something in your dreams, you’re likely running from something in your real life, too. To figure out what you need to face in your waking life, you might want to consider, the next time you have this dream, to turn and face what you’ve been running from. Remember, if you’ve got Jesus in your heart, before the devil can hurt you, he has to go through Him first. As scripture says, if God is for us, who can be against us? If what you’re running from is sin—definitely turn around and face it. Give it to God, ask Him for the strength (and to make a way as the case may be) to overcome, and let His blood wash you clean.

There are a few other reasons someone might dream of being chased/encounter something evil that come to mind—replaying a traumatic memory from childhood is getting more and more common, unfortunately. Less commonly, if the dream has no bearing on you whatsoever and none of the parabolic symbols seem to apply, it’s possible the dream could be prophetic in nature, and by that I mean a warning of something you’re about to go through personally, revealed so you can pray and be prepared, or even less commonly, God sometimes shows intercessors in a dream something that’s really happening to others so they can pray for the individual(s) involved. Again, to my knowledge, that’s relatively rare.

Most of the dreams I’ve had involving malevolent presences, whatever shape they happened to take in the dream, were actual demons invading our sleep, oppressing unclean spirits sent to torment, neutralize, and if possible, gain control over us. If you’re blood-bought and submitted to Christ, they have to go through Jesus first to achieve the latter end, and He’s bigger, so don’t let them scare you. I’ll discuss this more in a minute, but one way to tell real quick if the monster in your dream is a demon trying to scare you, is to stop running, face him down, and rebuke him in the name of Jesus and/or invoke the blood. You’ll be able to tell the nature of the beast by what happens next. If you’ve been running a long time, it may take a while to get it across to them that you mean it. It takes a while for a permissive “parent” to establish authority with a child used to being allowed to run wild. Like such children, your pet demons (the cat that came back the very next day would be proud of them sometimes, but keep at it) will test the boundaries to see what they can get away with. When I stand firm, most of the time, the dream itself abruptly ends, with or without waking up.

Love in Christ,

Andrea

Since they’re related, let’s go to a second letter:

A couple of weeks ago, I kept having horrible dreams. Most of them were about me laying in my bed asleep and then I’d look to the light on the ceiling and there’d be red fly things(swarms of them)flying around it. I kept saying ‘Satan be gone!’ but nothing happened. Then I tried to get up out of bed and go to my mother, but every time I threw myself off the bed, I somehow got sucked or dragged by some kind of force back into my bed. Please help it’s very distressing.

God bless,
Night Horrors

Dear Night,

Were you still dreaming during all of this? I think you correctly identified who’s behind this one. If you’ve been cleansed in the blood of the Lamb, he has no power over you unless you give it to him, and the blood-bought people of God have authority over him in the name of Jesus. If, however, you have unrepentant sin in your life, especially if it’s one the demon in particular has dominion over (such as lust, fear, rebellion, etc), you’ve give him power over you, and gaining victory will first require prayer and possibly fasting. To take the stronghold down, the sin must be removed and replaced with the appropriate fruit of the spirit. Some demonic spirits are more stubborn than others, and if you’ve been not getting anywhere on your own, you may want to consider asking your pastor or church for assistance (or direction in locating it.) You have to be careful, some churches would rather pretend the devil doesn’t do such things today, others, to put it delicately if I can, give the devil more glory than they do the Lord.

Otherwise, as the scripture says, “resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Demons can be like dogs (and sometimes are represented as such in our dreams) as well as flies. You have to sound like you mean it, and firmly believe from the heart in God and his promise of the authority believers have in his name. Some can command in the name of Jesus without directly invoking his name, for others speaking the words helps them believe. There is power in the blood of the Lamb, and in the name of Jesus, and invoking them. Remind them you’ve been washed in the blood of the Lamb and are covered in it. Remind them Christ has risen from the dead and granted his people authority over unclean spirits.

If all else fails, memorize scripture, and quote it to them. As a memorization tool rather than a talisman, post a scripture next to your bed, so you can read it by lamp or night light, and meditate on it as you fall asleep. I started doing this when I had a similar problem, and saw almost immediate results. The scripture I posted (and read) was:

I will both lay me down in peace and sleep; for Thou, LORD, only, doth make me dwell in safety.”
–Psalms 4:8

Wheat’s Eating You?

  • Posted on March 2, 2007 at 8:45 am

I was dreaming that a stack of wheat that was already cut for harvest was bound around a mans waist as I looked closer, I could see grains falling from the stack then bees were all around in my face so I took a sword and tried to hit them with no luck until i turned the sword on its edge at which time I was able to cut one almost in half then all the bees came at me then i woke up but could move for about 20-30 seconds wander what this dream means
Thanks,
Nick

Stack of wheat could represent you, the dreamer, possibly good works, ministry, and souls. The grains perhaps could represent seed (souls/words) “falling through the cracks” or simply to distinguish the wheat from straw (which has a negative association, especially in terms of works.)
Bees could be associated with honey, buzz, gossip, stinging words (accusations.) The potency is doubled if you’re allergic to bees or afraid of them.
The sword is probably the sword of the spirit, the word of god, especially if it was double edged. It could be carnal warfare as well, fighting back in your own power and strength, in which case, I’d suggest the former would be more effective. It could indicate at first you’re gentle in your handling of the situation, using the blunt end, but when this had no results, you resort to using the sharp end. The reference is probably to your verbal response, with a movement from blunt to sharp.
Cutting in half, division, as in divide and conquer, also could mean discernment (dividing good from evil) or judgment.

In the natural, what’s the best way to handle bees? In my experience, to stand still and not make a lot of noise, in which case, after what seems like forever for Mrs. Bees-are-scary here, once the bee’s curiosity is satisfied, he moseys along his way. Besides correctly using the word of God to your defense, note the wheat is girded around the waist, which harkens to the first half of Eph 6:14, “Stand therefore, having your loins girded about with truth . . .”

If this reflects an actual situation, might I suggest you try the rest of the armor in this passage:

. . .and having on the breastplate of righteousness and your feet shod with the preparation on the Gospel of peace. Above all, take the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the firey darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.” (vs 14b-17)

I can’t help but note the stingers on those bees probably feel quite a bit like firey darts. I’m also noting wheat is golden in color, and gold is associated with the truth as well. The truth may be your best defense.

As to unable to move for a few seconds, unable to move in association with dreams is usually literal—except in sleepwalkers, our bodies are usually in a state of temporary paralysis while we dream, and the effect could have been lingering. Fear can also induce such immobility (ever heard the phrases, “like a deer caught in the headlights,” or “scared stiff”?)

Hang onto that armor, we’ll be diving into spiritual warfare a little more on Monday.

Since it’s short, let me answer another one of these real quick:

Hey Andrea.

I keep having a dream about college and when i arrive at the gates everyone dies but then they spring back to life and laugh at me. Its kind of disturbing but also funny in a way. i wonder what it could mean? thanks for your help.

God bless,
Emma

Unless you’re currently in college or about to enter, in which case that aspect is probably literal, the association is usually higher learning (similar to high school, only more advanced and not so much association with immaturity), in biblical times, the authorities and elders (wisemen) sat at the gates of a city to conduct business, so the gates could indicate a position of power and/or authority. If the people in the dream weren’t Christians, their dying can represent them coming to faith in Christ. What you describe here reminds me of the symbolism behind baptism as well, where we are symbolically buried with Christ, and then promptly sprung right back up again in the newness of His resurrection. It could also be dealing with the way you look at death, and a reminder, for a Christian, death is not the end. We are dead to this world, but alive in Christ. It almost seems like a collegiate prank, with the laughter.

It could be a warning and a reassurance in the same breath. It could mean you’re entering a time of higher learning, ie, about to go through a bad trial (the connection is we learn more on this walk under fire than any other time) where everyone or everything seems to be dying (not necessarily physically), but the situation will reverse itself and afterwards you’ll be able to laugh about it. Buried in there (pun not intended) may be an exhortation to have faith and trust God to work things out.

In Christ’s Love,
Andrea Graham

Trouble (and Peer Pressure) Comes in Threes.

  • Posted on January 26, 2007 at 1:13 pm

Dear Andrea,

I had the following dream in June. I am a middle-aged empty nester with six grandchildren. I bought a new business in July and took on a significant volunteer leadership role this year in an organization. This dream came about a week before both of these events occurred.

I was teaching a group of college kids at a high school camp. After our lesson, we toured the camp and were walking around looking at different buildings, etc., and I was explaining some of the purposes of them to the students. Across the way, here came three rams running right at us. I did not notice the colors of them. We all froze and were unable to move because the charge of the rams was so great. One of the rams butted one of the young male students. All three rams then ran off.

A few things are unclear. The students are probably those you are responsible for leading, and your actions a metaphor for what you’re doing with them in real life. The meaning of the college students at a high school camp will depend on whether by teaching you mean they were campers, or if you were training them to be counselors to the high school campers. If the former, this could be invoking 1 Cor 3:1-3, that they are at an age where they should have moved onto “higher learning” but aren’t. High school normally shares the higher learning meaning, but in your case, it may again reference immature behavior, as in, “acting like a high schooler.”

A ram is a male sheep, but it’s also, per dictionary.com, “any of various devices for battering, crushing, driving, or forcing something, esp. a battering ram.” Considering the behavior the rams exhibit, I strongly suspect the symbol is a play on words here. I suspect the word “charge” is also a play on words.
The number three–it’s possible it could mean literally three trials or accusations will hit your organization like a battering ram, disrupting your work and leaving you paralyzed, and one will hit it’s target. That number, however, also has the symbolic meaning of conformity, which with the invocation of high school would mean negative, overwhelming peer pressure rather than being conformed to Christ.

It’s also possible the number three in this instance is doing double duty and carrying both meanings.

Running away–I believe this was meant to reassure you and encourage you to stand firm, as it seems to invoke James 4:7, “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”

This is all I have received of the Lord. Give it some prayer. The Lord will show you whether I have discerned rightly or if any of my insights are on the mark.
